From the Collection: This collection contains the photographs of the Ann Baumann Trust, which was created by Ann Baumann, daughter of New Mexico artist Gustave Baumann, in order to promote Baumann’s artistic legacy and preserve his archival materials.

The collection contains prints, color slides and transparencies, negatives, and photo albums documenting Baumann's life, artwork, and legacy.

The collection consists primarily of Gustave Baumann’s photographs, including professional portraits of Baumann at work in his various studios; photographs of Baumann's artwork, including marionettes, woodcuts, paintings, and sculptures; photo albums documenting Baumann's time in Chicago, Munich, Indiana, and Santa Fe; and promotional and reference photographs acquired by Baumann, probably for artistic inspiration or for use in his commercial work. The collection also contains personal snapshots, most likely taken by Baumann or his friends, depicting various scenes, including: Baumann with friends and fellow artists; residents and places in Brown County, Indiana; residents of New Mexico; Baumann's Santa Fe home and studio; daily life and events in Santa Fe, such as the Santa Fe Fiesta, parties and social events, and museum exhibitions; Indian pueblos and dances; towns in northern New Mexico; and landscapes of the Southwest, including scenes in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and California. Many of these snapshots were probably taken to be used as reference images for Baumann's artwork, and some of them correspond closely with his woodcut prints.

In addition, this collection contains numerous photographs of the Baumann family at home, including Gustave and Jane Baumann as newlyweds, baby photos of their daughter Ann, and family gatherings and holidays. The collection also contains the personal photographs of Gustave Baumann’s wife Jane Henderson Baumann from before and after her marriage, including portraits of Jane and her family members; snapshots of Jane with friends and family, during her acting career, and during her trips through Europe; postcards from Jane's travels in Europe; photo albums; and photographs of Jane's ancestors dating from the 1860s to the 1890s, including cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and tintypes, as well as some framed and encased photographs. The collection also contains the personal photographs of Gustave and Jane Baumann's daughter Ann Baumann, including photographs of Ann as a child, probably taken by Gustave or Jane Baumann; later photos of Ann as an adult; photo albums made by Ann during her high school and college years; and matted photographs taken by Ann while she was in school.

Finally, this collection contains the research photographs of Gala Chamberlain, who served as trustee of the Ann Baumann Trust following Ann Baumann's death in 2011. Most of these photographs were taken between 1972 and 2012 in support of Chamberlain's publication of the catalogue raisonné of Baumann's color woodcuts. Her research photographs include color prints, a significant number of color slides and transparencies, and negatives of Baumann's artwork, primarily his woodcuts and paintings. In addition to being used for research purposes, some of these images may have been used in the published version of the catalogue raisonné.
