Mexican Revolution and Mills, New Mexico: Real Photo Postcards

 Unprocessed — Box: 411
Identifier: HP.2022.15

Content Description

Postcards dating from ca. 1910 to 1920 presumed to have been collected by William Hokuf (1881-1946), his wife Catherine Sloup, or her previous husband Martin Sloup, who died in 1922. William "Big Bill" Hokuf was a professional wrestler who traveled widely when he was young. He later joined the Omaha Police Department and worked as a wrestling coach and trainer himself. The donor believes Hokuf may have collected these in New Mexico, perhaps when traveling or visiting family or friends, though they may also have come from the Sloups. These approximately 92 postcards show events around the Mexican Revolution and the Mexican Expedition (also called the Pershing - Villa Expedition / Pancho Villa Expedition / Punitive Expedition). However, the large set of photographs featuring Mills, NM during its boom years is more uncommon. Some of the images are by Horne, Bortell, and Clayton Studio, most are currently unattributed, including at least one possibly created by a female photographer.
