Emma Whitman Howard: Portsmouth Cattle Company
Content Description
Unusual 19th century photographs of a small investor-owned cattle company near Springer / southeast of Maxwell which was founded around the end of the Colfax County War. Images feature Emma Whitman Howard, along with other relatives and associates. Emma was married to Henry Howard, superintendent of the Portsmouth Cattle Co. It seems likely the occasion for this set was a visit by Arletta [Lettie] Whitman of Wardsboro, VT, who traveled to New Mexico in 1888. Lettie was the sister of Emma Howard. One photograph, an interior, claims to show Senator Dorsey’s sitting room (Dorsey Mansion?).
