56 3x4 black and white photos by Reinhold Schreiber of German prisoners at the internment camp at Ft. Stanton, NM, 1941-45. These photographs depict a critical part of Fort Stanton's history when the facility was utilized as a camp for civilian internees during WWII. Reinhold Schreiber, the former ship's photographer of the S.S. Columbus and a close friend of the donor's father, Melvin Miller, was interned at the camp. Later, In the early 1950s, Reinhold Schreiber and wife Else immigrated to the US and became citizens. They settled in San Francisco, where Schreiber began a lifelong career with the locally prominent Moulin Studios photography firm, specializing in darkroom work and large-format commercial color print production. Miller, the donor's father, served in the U.S. Immigration Service at the internment camp. These images provide insights into the daily life of those living and working at the camp. Included with the donation were diaries, a patch, buttons, and other paper ephemera which were transferred to the History Library.
