Content Description

Prints and digital files representing the New Mexico-based work of retired physician and photographer Alan L. Pearlman, 2003-2014. The collection includes 3 series: Santa Fe Faces (approximately 121 images), Land of Enchantment (approximately 35 images), and Everything is Altar (16 images). Pearlman described these as follows: "Santa Fe Faces: The story of a place is written in the faces of its inhabitants. Building on its native-American, Spanish and anglo-American roots, Santa Fe's ethnic and cultural diversity has expanded greatly. This project is an attempt to capture a moment in this rich history with photographic portraits of interesting individuals who live and work in the city or nearby, photographed in a setting that indicates what they do." "Land of Enchantment: This photographic project explores the interface between the developed landscape and the small areas of relatively undeveloped beauty that remain in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment. The goal is to focus attention on the destructive nature of these changes with the hope of contributing to the continuing but thus far only marginally successful efforts to curb them." "Everything is Altar: In this project, I have photographed houses of worship, then combined each image with another in order to highlight the relationship of the buildings to their surrounding landscape, community, or historical context. There are approximately 50 images in the series; only the 16 set in New Mexico are included in the proposed donation."
