James R. Johnson, artist research photography materials
Content Description
From the James R. Johnson Estate, 20,322 color slides the artist made for art/painting research. Initial appraisal of the material by Margoluis & Moss notes the slides were taken by Mr. Johnson, from the 1960's to the 1980's to assist him as studies for his artwork. Active much of his life in the U.S. Military, James Johnson retired to Santa Fe to pursue his painting of the American southwest. For more than twenty-five years he photographed people, places and objects related to the region. These were saved as tools of memory for his future paintings. In doing so, he recorded details of life not often preserved on film (old buckets; horses bridles and fittings; barn doors and windows, etc.). This collection of slides provides details into the visual and material culture of the period.
