Scope and Content Note

San Antonio, San Marcial and Socorro merchant, hotel operator, banker and father of Conrad Hilton (Chairman, Hilton Hotels Corporation). The collection contains personal papers including his marriage certificate, bills and receipts, and legal documents relating to the settlement of his estate. Business papers include mortgage and mining deeds, claims, his widow Mary Laufersweiler Hilton's 1934 tax receipts, Hilton's 1916 bank book, a stock certificate and stock sales agreement.

Biography

was born in Oslo, Norway in 1854. After coming to the United States, he became a merchant, hotel operator, and banker in San Antonio, San Marcial and Socorro, New Mexico. He married in 1885 and their son, Conrad eventually became chairman of the Hilton Hotels Corporations. Besides Hilton's business activities, he also formed a law firm in 1915 with his father. Hilton died in 1918.
