Scope and Content

This Marjorie Burr collection includes four series. The first series "Zoning, Late 1970's to 1980's" includes a variety of documents related to zoning issues. It includes the Las Cruces Extra-Territorial Zoning Commission Agendas and Minutes from 1975 to 1976, Correspondence to the Extra-Territorial Zoning Commission, zoning maps, reports and budgets. Additionally this series includes several zoning ordinances and newspaper clippings related to zoning with dates ranging from 1975 to 1977.

The second series, "Memorial General Hospital" includes agendas, reports, and newspaper clippings. These documents range from topics of the hospital committee, Concerned Citizens for MGH, and the proposed reorganization of administration of Memorial General Hospital from 1976 to 1987 make up the second series. The third series “Organizations” contains an assortment of organizations that Marjorie Burr was involved in or worked with. These include League of Women Voters of Greater Las Cruces, Concerned Citizens for Memorial General Hospital, and Friends of the Charter. The final series "Land Use and Development" includes several booklets and reports on different land use issues including Indian Resource Development, New Mexico State University Handbook, and a manual on Urban Land-use, dates for these items range from 1982 to 1988.

Biographical Sketch

Marjorie Burr was an active member of several local organizations including League of Women Voters of Greater Las Cruces, Concerned Citizens for Memorial General Hospital, and Friends of the Charter. The League of Women Voters of Greater Las Cruces describes itself as “a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy” (http://www.lwvglc.org/). The Friends of the Charter organization was a group that favored the adoption of a Home Rule municipality in Las Cruces. Burr also served on the Las Cruces City Council and was a member of the Extra Territorial Zoning Commission.
