Scope and Contents

This Roberta K. Haldane papers contain research and writing on Lincoln County, New Mexico and its residents. The collection is organized in three main series: Family Histories, Research Files, and Photographs. Haldane's family research covers the family of Ananias Green, a pioneer in the Territory of New Mexico, and also includes John Lee Green family history. The papers also include her research files for the book Gold-Mining Boomtown: people of White Oaks, Lincoln County, New Mexico. This research on pioneering people of White Oaks, New Mexico, details the history of more than 40 families and individuals who made their homes there during its boom. Included is correspondence with descendants who shared documents and photographs for Haldane’s book, including two CDs containing images. Also includes correspondence to descendants of those families, photographs, family bible of the Green/Gilmore families. The collection contains original photographs, tintypes, as well as photocopied images. Handwritten accounts and legal documents were transcribed and are placed next to the original document in most cases. Some brief mentions of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett are included in the collection. The collection also contains a long braid of human hair belonging to Anna Gilmore Green, cut after her death in 1892 at the age of 44. An account of her saving her own children and her neighbors' family before succumbing to the same illness is detailed in the collection. The collection was kept in the original order as accessioned. Photographs were removed from photo albums for preservation purposes. The photo folders retain the orignail names given them by Haldane in the albums.

Biographical / Historical

Roberta Key Haldane is a New Mexico historian and author of several books and articles, including the book Gold-Mining Boomtown: People of White Oaks, Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory. She has researched the history of White Oaks, as well as more than 40 families and individuals who made their homes there during its boom.

A native of Lincoln County, New Mexico, Haldane is descended from a pioneer Lincoln County ranching family. She is the great-granddaughter of Ellen Amanda Green Key and compiled the Green family history. Haldane worked as a technical writer for the Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Haldane is the co-authored, with Barbara Jeanne Branum, of the award winning book Corralled in Old Lincoln County, New Mexico: The Lin Branum Family of Coyote Canyon and the I Bar X.
