Biographical / Historical
The Anthony Women's Civic Club of Anthony, New Mexico -Texas was organized in April 1947 to seek out ways to make Anthony a cleaner, healthier, and more enjoyable community in which to live. The club met the first and third Tuesday of each month and membership was open to any woman interested in the united effort toward civic projects related to Anthony.
The club was established under the auspices of the Anthony Chamber of Commerce but eventually operated as a separate organization. During the years the club was active, they were responsible for hiring the first garbage disposal service for Anthony and the first street sweeper, placement of street signs, aiding with cemetery care and beautification, and other projects aimed at community improvement.
The club records include organizational documentation such as membership rosters, minutes, correspondence, constitution, scrapbooks, and other related documents outlining the club’s history. The club is no longer in existence and the records demonstrate the founding of the club in its early stages. The records span from ca. 1947-1990.
