The Rose Marie Valdes Pangborn papers are comprised of three series: personal, professional and photographs. The materials span from 1953 - 2000 and include articles about Valdes-Pangborn, eulogies and obituaries written after her death in 1990, her CV, a bibliography of her publications, written tributes to Pangborn, programs from several Pangborn Sensory Science Symposia, materials produced by NMSU about Pangborn, a copy of her student record from the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and photographs.

Biographical / Historical

Born Rose Marie Valdes in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1932 to Leo J. Valdes, a native of Chihuahua, México, and Rosalie Page, a native of Las Cruces. Rose Marie obtained her B.S. degree in 1953 from New Mexico State University and in 1955 she received her M.S. degree at Iowa State University.

Valdes-Pangborn joined the faculty of the University of California, Davis in 1955 where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses for 35 years. During her time teaching, she received numerous prestigious awards since she was known for her outstanding teaching where she obtained various teaching awards from the University of California, Davis and from the Institute of Food Technologists.

Rose Marie was internationally known as a pioneer in the field of sensory analysis of food attributes since she was one of the first sensory researchers. Throughout her career, she published more than 180 scientific articles and co-authored three textbooks during her lifetime. In addition, the Pangborn Symposium a sensory science conference is named in her honor. In 1973, she received a distinguished alumna award and in 1988 an outstanding alumna award from New Mexico State University. In 1984, the University of Helsinki, Finland awarded her the Doctor Honoris Causa in Food Science.

A couple of years before her death, she co-founded the Association for Chemoreception Sciences (ACHEMS, and the Sensory Reception Scholarship Fund (SSSF) which provides financial support to sensory researchers.

Valdes-Panborn passed away on March 17, 1990 at the age of 57 in El Macero, California.

Rose Marie Valdes Pangborn was a Mexican-American food scientist, food technologist, professor and a poineer in the field of sensory analysis of food atttributes. Rose Marie was born in Las Cruces and earned her B.S. in 1953 at New Mexico State University and a M.S. in 1955 in Foods at Iowa State Univesity.
