Scope and Contents
This collection consists primarily of research conducted by Cal Traylor which may have been used for Traylor’s articles. The Cal Traylor papers are arranged into seven series: Research and Writing, Personal Papers, Brochures and Pamphlets, Organizations, Oversized Material newspaper clippings, Maps, Audio visual material and Photographs. The papers span the years 1964-2006.

Biographical / Historical
Calvin “Cal” Lee Charles Traylor (October 5, 1924 – June 11, 2015) was a business owner, historical researcher, and an active and important member of the Doña Ana County Historical Society. Born in Melrose, New Mexico to Elmer and Myrtle Traylor, Calvin Traylor was raised in Elida, New Mexico. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On May 31, 1957, Traylor married Frances Pill and in 1963 they moved to Las Cruces. The Traylor’s owned an employment agency which had offices in Las Cruces and Alamogordo as well as a gift and craft wholesale company. Traylor had an MBA and taught accounting, management, and marketing courses at New Mexico State University. Traylor’s main interest was history, particularly the history of the Mesilla Valley and of Pat Garrett and was known for his expertise about him. Traylor was also responsible for purchasing the hearse that transported Pat Garrett to his grave from a small museum in Pinos Altos and for arranging for the hearse to be brought back to Las Cruces and then donated it to the Doña Ana Sheriff’s Museum in Las Cruces. Cal Traylor passed away on June 11, 2015.
