Various files regarding NMSU organizations, which focus on minority efforts. Records include programs such as: Advance, Black programs, Diversity Council, Generaciones, Hispanic Council, Fiestas Latina week, immigration issues, MEChA, Ngage New Mexico, RISE, NMSU minority programs for students, Social Justice Symposium and other files donor was involved while employed at NMSU. Note: records compiled from Laura Gutierrez-Spencer after her retirement in June 2020. All files are identified, arranged and in alphabetical order by donor.

Biographical / Historical

Laura Gutierrez-Spencer is a New Mexican native. She was born in Las Cruces and raised in Silver City. Gutierrez-Spencer attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, for two years, before she graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with a bachelor’s degree. She earned a master’s degree from NMSU and a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. After spending seven years as a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Gutierrez-Spencer returned to Las Cruces in 1996 and began her position as NMSU's Director of Chicano Programs. As director of Chicano Programs, Gutierrez-Spencer’s mission was to change perceptions and perspectives, she often offered guidance to underrepresented students in order for them to succeed and navigate while attending NMSU. During her career at NMSU, she inherited the Generaciones program, a mother-daughter program for fifth grade girls and their mothers. On June 30, 2020, Gutierrez-Spencer retired from NMSU after spending 24 years.
