Scope and Contents

The Dona Ana Rockhound Club records are arranged in two series: Organizational records and bulletins of the Dona Ana Rockhound Club. These materials span the years 1948-1982. Organizational records consist of articles of incorporation and bylaws, correspondence, financial matters, meeting minutes, membership, and other club-related matters. The bulletins include monthly bulletins titled The Staurolite, published by the club which spans from the 1960s to-1980s.

Biographical / Historical

Dona Ana Rockhound Club, a non-profit corporation was first organized and became active in 1947. The club's objective was to "facilitate the collections, identification, study, and processing of rocks and minerals" and also "the study of artifacts and the study of the history, archeology, and geology of southern New Mexico." Membership was open to men and women of college-age or older and the annual dies were $2.50 per person. The club met every second Friday of each month during September through May at the Encantada Mobile Home Park Activities Center. meetings consisted of a short business meeting, door prizes, a program of interest for the club. Field trips were also conducted and findings/observations were reported to the members. After 44 years, the club ceased activities in 1991.
