Biographical / Historical

The League of Women Voters of Greater Las Cruces (LWVGLC) was founded in November of 1967 with the support of the state chapter of the organization and of a growing population of young women interested in starting a local branch of the League in southern New Mexico. Initially organized as a provisional chapter, the group conducted a “know your town” study of local politics in Las Cruces and worked to promote the call for a state constitutional convention through public forums, speakers, and columns in the local newspaper. Following the publication of the governmental study “Las Cruces,” LWVGLC was recognized as a local league in 1969 by the League of Women Voters of the United States and the League of Women Voters of New Mexico. The LWVGLC has continued to study local issues, including controversial issues such as land use and health care. The local organization has issued position statements on solid waste recycling; metropolitan courts; Branigan Memorial Library; county government; election procedures; health care in Doña Ana County; land use planning; municipal elections; water; and education. The League has also been active in voter services activities, assisting with voter registration, holding candidates’ forums, and publishing information about candidates and elected officials.
