Biographical / Historical
Dr. John Robert Eyer was a professor of entomology at New Mexico State University from 1927 to 1961. Dr. Eyer was born in Dayton, Ohio on March 15, 1895. He died in Carlsbad, New Mexico on January 30, 1976.
Dr. Eyer received an A. B. degree from Cornell University in 1917. After graduation, he was employed in Pennsylvania until the start of World War I. Eyer enlisted in the army and worked in the bacteriological and pathological laboratory at Camp Sherman's Base Hospital.
After leaving the army in 1919, Dr. Eyer began work on his Master's degree at Penn State. He completed his master's work in 1921 and went on to receive his Ph. D. from the University of Minnesota in 1924. He was then hired to work in the Bureau of Plant Industry in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Citing cold winters and impending political upheaval within the Bureau, Eyer left for New Mexico in 1927 where he spent the remainder of his life.
