Biographical / Historical
The Dona Ana County Associated Sportsmen was established in 1958 as the Douglas Aircraft Hunting and Fishing Club. In the early days of establishing the club, there were 70-75 active members total and the meetings were held at White Sands Missile Range. Due to lost in contract and members wanting to keep the club active, the club moved to Las Cruces and became the Dona Ana County Associated Sportsmen. In 1965, DACAS became affiliated with the New Mexico Wildlife Federation and then meetings were held in Las Cruces at the former courthouse.
In 1974, the club underwent changes, which consisted of becoming incorporated as well as altering their bylaws in order to make officers members of the board. In the same year, the first recipient was awarded the DACAS scholarship. Since the formation of the scholarship committee, DACAS has awarded scholarships to wildlife and fisheries student at New Mexico State University as well as other community clubs within the region.
The club is known to be one of the oldest club in Doña Ana county and over the years the club has worked with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife on several projects that promote and protect Doña Ana county and the surrounding community’s outdoor heritage.
