Biographical / Historical

On October 11, 1890, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was founded in Washington, D.C. The DAR focuses on work in local communities in order to promote three essential functions - historic preservation, education and patriotism. The organization is “non-profit and non-political and women 18 years or older who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution may join, regardless of race, religion or creed.”

Four years after the NSDAR was established, August 18, 1894, Mrs. Adlai Stevenson, the president of the general membership of the NSDAR, created the New Mexico state organization by appointing Mary Catherine (Beardsley) Prince to be the first state regent of the Territory of New Mexico. By October 25, 1898, the Sunshine Chapter in Santa Fe was formed, becoming the first chapter in New Mexico. On February 22, 1900, it received its charter. On January 25, 1905, the chapter was renamed the Stephen Watts Kearny Chapter. The Doña Ana Chapter was organized November 13, 1948 and was known as the Alice Adam Chapter. Mrs. Charles E. Tede served as the chapter's first regent from 1948-1950. Three years later, the name was changed to Doña Ana Chapter.
