Biographical / Historical
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is an international service organization that traces its beginnings to 18th-century England. The first North American lodge to be organized authoritatively was Washington Lodge #1, founded on April 26, 1819 in Baltimore, Maryland by Thomas Wildey and four Odd Fellows from England. On September 25, 1851 the order instituted the Rebekah Degree for women.
The Rebekah Assembly of New Mexico was founded on October 7, 1907 by the Odd Fellows Grand Lodge of the Territory of New Mexico. It was founded with 11 lodges. It is currently unknown when Miriam Lodge #25 was founded.
The New Mexico organization is currently incorporated as Independent Order of Odd Fellows Rebekah Assembly of New Mexico, Inc. and maintains a website at www.nmrebekahs.org.
