Scope and Contents

The J.W. “Jack” Newberry collection contains letters and business paperwork relating to his horticultural work, including letters from the Stark Bro’s Nurseries & Orchards Co. There are two medals from Stark-Burbank Institute of Horticulture, two oral history tapes from his daughter and son-in-law Virginia and Scott Taylor, and some oversize material. The collection also contains 108 photographs which subjects include Newberry’s daughter Virginia, other family members, local children, his home and the surrounding area of Picacho.

Biographical / Historical

John Wesley Newberry was born in Tennessee on July 4, 1879. Son of Elias B. Newberry a Union soldier in the civil war and Sarah Catherine Rambo, Newberry lived in Tennessee until he was 19. He spent two years in Tusculum College at Greeneville. He then went to Contract Machine Shop in Denver, Colorado and moved farther west he was in the Frisco Hospital during the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. After spending some time in Eastern New Mexico, specifically Clovis, in 1912 Newberry purchased some land in the Las Cruces, New Mexico area. Newberry developed new varieties of apples, peaches and Mexican June corn after starting out with alfalfa and field corn. He was a member of the Dona Ana County Farmer Bureau, the Marketing Association, and the Elephant Butte Alfalfa Association. Newberry was married to Rachel Simpson on May 20, 1917 and had a daughter Virginia Newberry Taylor. He was a member of the York and Scottish Rite Mason and was also a Shriner. He died in 1971 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
