Biography / History
Collective academic and interdisciplinary unit, founded in 1969. The Border States University Consortium was founded in 1969 after four state universities in Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona agreed to establish a group to unite teaching projects and related research of Mexico and Latin America. The group sponsored conferences, an occasional papers series, grant proposals, as well as academic exchanges between the United States and other Latin American nations. It placed special emphasis on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Charter members were the University of Texas-El Paso, San Diego State University, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Arizona. Other universities joining later were New Mexico State University, Arizona State University, Pan American University (currently known as the University of Texas-Pan American), and the University of California-San Diego.
