Scope and Contents

The Eleanor G. Schurtz letters consist of written condolences on the death of her husband Major Paul Schurtz who died in 1944. There are six letters from Governor John Dempsy, Senator Dennis Chavez, Douglas MacArthur, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall, and Major General John Williams.

Biographical / Historical

Eleanor G. Schurtz, of Deming, New Mexico, was the widow of Major Paul Wharton Schurtz. Major Schurtz was a member of the New Mexico National Guard, 200th, Coast Artillery and became a prisoner of war and died in December 1944. Eleanor had a son named Gerald Schurtz who was a colonel at White Sands Missile Range.
