Scope and Contents

St. Paul’s Methodist Church records are incomplete and consist principally of church registers, photographs, building, program promotion and lists of those involved in the construction of the church in 1912. Also included are some old bulletins, including one from 1913 that was found when the organ was refurnished. Additionally, these are clippings, catalogs, receipts and advertisements from a more recent time. One of the church histories contained in the collection was written in 1893. A 1892 Journal of the Eighth Annual Session of the New Mexico English Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church also has survived. There is a list of W.N.M.S. members of the first M.E. Church on July 8, 1912. Fifty photographs, including those used in the 1948 building program booklet.

Biographical / Historical

The first Methodist sermon in the Las Cruces area was delivered by an itinerant preacher, Rev. L. B. Ellis. In the 1880s, approximately 20 families under the leadership of Judge and Mrs. R. L. Young built the first Methodist Church on Griggs Street. In 1912, expansion was necessary and St. Paul’s was erected. Its organ installed at this time was for many years the finest in the area. More expansion was needed in 1950 and an education building was built. The church purchased property bordering Alameda Boulevard and May Street in 1955 and built a new parsonage in 1956.
