Biography / History

Bennett Yell was born and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the son of government filmmaker William Yell. He worked as a professional photographer in Las Cruces before moving to Florida and opening the Chaparrel Studio in Fort Lauderdale. He later left photography and became an insurance agent in Ocala, Florida.

Abstract

The Bennett Yell photograph collection consists of approximately two thousand one hundred seven (2,107) items of photographic images in various formats created by Bennett Yell of Yell Studio in Las Cruces, New Mexico, from approximately 1967 to 1971. It includes color and black and white negatives of various sizes, 35 mm transparencies, and prints of related to his photography business as well as locations and events in southern New Mexico and northern Mexico. Subjects include Our Lady of Guadalupe, Eugene Manlove Rhodes' grave and services, shooting of the Clint Eastwood movie "Hang 'Em High," Las Cruces, Elephant Butte, Juarez bull fights, Vaqueros Day parade, and other subjects. , Las Cruces, Elephant Butte, Juarez bull fights, Vaqueros Day parade, and other subjects.Hang 'Em High, Las Cruces, Elephant Butte, Juarez bull fights, Vaqueros Day parade, and other subjects.

Processing Information

The collection was minimally processed by Caitlin Wells, February 2015. Several pieces of realia were removed from the collection and deaccessioned. Loose negatives and prints were housed in acid-free folders.
