Biography / History
Elnora Wiley was a registrar at New Mexico State University (NMSU), who during the course of her work at NMSU, was contacted by Jone Howlind. Howlind’s maiden name was Justine B. Newbrough and she was the daughter of John Ballou Newbrough, founder of the Shalam Colony in southern New Mexico. Coincidently, Wiley lived on the farm where the colony once had their residence and she was fascinated with the stories of the people behind the colony. She contacted Howlind for a detailed account of her life at Shalam Colony, which became a book called Inside the Shalam Colony. Wiley also contacted and corresponded with Margaret Moore, an orphan raised at the colony.
