Crescent Club records

 Collection
Identifier: Ms-0308

Scope and Content

The records held here consist of yearbooks and scrapbooks that trace the history of the Crescent Club from its beginning in 1913 to 1991, although the materials in the scrapbooks only date from 1958. Yearbooks and programs from the Crescent Club and the New Mexico Federation of Women’s Clubs occasionally include handwritten notes. The first volume of the scrapbooks contains the history of the Crescent Club written by Milikien, member lists, papers related to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ centennial celebration and assorted other items, while the rest of the scrapbooks follow the traditional format of photos, clippings, programs and memorabilia representing club activities, each volume usually representing a 1-2 year period.

Biography / History

The Crescent Club of Anthony, New Mexico was formed in 1913 by eight women with the stated aim of “mutual helpfulness and the promotion of higher intellectual, social, and moral conditions for the women of the community.” In 1916 the club joined the New Mexico Federation of Women's Clubs. Throughout its existence the Crescent Club contributed to a variety of educational initiatives, charitable organizations, and public works such as road improvement. It also spoke out on political and social issues such as women’s suffrage, child welfare, prohibition and obscenity laws, both as an individual club and in concert with the New Mexico Federation of Women’s Clubs.

In 1983 the club historian and former president Hazel B. Milikien wrote a fairly detailed history of the Crescent Club drawing on the organization’s minutes, which remain in the possession of former Crescent Club officers. This history is included in Volume 1 of this collection.

The Crescent Club is now inactive. The exact date of the club’s disbanding is not known but was probably around 1993.
