Scope and Content

The Dr. Eugene M. Fisher Family Papers span the years 1896-1983. The earliest materials are Dr. Fisher's student cards from the Medical Department of Ft. Worth University. Also included are organizational membership cards, a recipe book, invitations, a baby book for Dr. and Mrs. Fisher's child Eugene, born January 13, 1901, news clippings regarding Dr. Fisher's death in Roswell, and Masonic Bulletins, dated 1941, from the Montebello, California chapter, where Willis Fisher was a member. The collection contains 25 photographs, nearly all depicting the Fisher family, ca. 1900-1915. Exceptions are a cabinet card portrait of Eugene Fisher, ca. 1890s and a portrait of Willis Fisher, 1964. Notable is a photograph of Dr. Fisher in the office of his medical practice, ca. 1905, showing the medical equipment of a turn-of-the-century doctor's office.

Biographical Information

Dr. Eugene M. Fisher was a prominent Roswell physician for 29 years, from 1903 until his sudden death in 1932. Dr. Fisher was born May 22, 1874 in Spencer, Iowa. He attended the Medical Department of Ft. Worth University, Ft. Worth, Texas, beginning in 1896. He began his practice in Gainesville, Texas then moved to Roswell in 1903. Fisher was married to Lillis Marie Fisher and the marriage produced three children; Eugene, Willis and Lillis. Fisher was active in the American Medical Association, New Mexico Medical Society, Pecos Valley Medical Association, Chaves County Medical Society and was on the staff of St. Mary's Hospital. He also was a member of several fraternal organizations, including; the Roswell Lodges of the Masons, the Odd Fellows, The Knights of Pythias and the Elks.
