Hugh M. Johnson papers

Scope and Content
The Hugh M. Johnson Papers comprise two linear feet and span the years 1936-1986. The papers are arranged into three series: Correspondence, Research Files, and Photographs.
The Correspondence series, 1936-1986, is arranged alphabetically by correspondent surname and contains letters received by Johnson from professional and amateur astronomers and astronomical societies. The correspondence contains notes on observations, drawings, and information on astronomy and astronomical societies. Persons with large amounts of correspondence have all of their correspondence placed in one folder. Persons with only a few letters to Johnson have been placed in a folder designated by a letter of the alphabet, and usually contain correspondence from more than one individual.
Significant correspondents include: Arthur F. O'D. Alexander, David P. Barcroft, Thomas R. Cave, C. A. Chant, F.L. Frazine, Oscar E. Monnig, Bertrand M. Peek, David W. Rosebrugh, Elmer J. Reese, J. Russell Smith, Frank Vaughn, E. K. White, and Latimer J. Wilson.
See the Walter H. Haas Papers, Ms 399, for Johnson's correspondence with Haas.
The Research files series, 1936-1941, contains notes and drawings of planetary and lunar observations made by Johnson. These observations took place primarily in 1937. There is a holograph by Frank Vaughn on Jovian Transits which is also in this series. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject.
The Photographs series, 1937-1960, contains photographs which have been removed from the correspondence and research files series for preservation purposes. These photographs have been placed in folders with names identical to the ones from which they were taken. A preservation photocopy of the photograph has been placed in the folder where the photograph originated. This series is arranged in the same order as the photographs were taken from the previous series, with all the correspondence files listed alphabetically before the research files.
