Gerald Diamant Papers,

 Collection
Identifier: Ms-0382

Scope and Content

The papers of Gerald Diamant, D.V.M., range in date from1935 to 1979, with the majority covering the period from 1950 to 1979. The papers cover Diamant's research interests as a veterinarian and focus primarily on his work on eradicating the screwworm from cattle. The collection is broken down into four series: Subject files, Printed materials, Photographs and transparencies, and Oversize materials.

The Subject files series primarily contains articles written and collected by Diamant on topics pertaining to his research as a veterinarian. Some of the major topics are screwworm eradication, epidemiology, field trials, and veterinary regulations. The subject files also contain speeches made by Diamant as well as notebooks and a scrapbook of news clippings.

The Printed materials series contains journals and pamphlets relating to veterinary medicine and science in general. There are series of publications, such as the Cornell Science Leaflets, as well as individual journals that contain articles in which Diamant was interested. These are arranged alphabetically by title. Books that were in the collection have been removed. A list of materials removed is available in the repository.

The Photographs series contains primarily photographs of research relating to screwworm eradication. There is a booklet of photographs prepared by Douglas G. Moring, called "Photographic Comparisons of Key Characters in the Screwworm and Related Blowfly Series" which, for preservation reasons, has been dismantled. The pages of the booklet were photocopied onto acid-free paper before the photographs were removed so a visual record of the original has been retained. There also are 35 mm color transparencies on exotic ticks that are contained in this series. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by subject.

The Oversize items are materials that are too large to fit into regular archival boxes. This series primarily contains the degrees which Diamant received and certificates and licenses needed to practice veterinary medicine. In addition there is one wheel which shows the life cycle of a screwworm and how the cow is affected.
