Scope and Content

The Simon F. Kropp papers comprise 4.5 linear feet and span the years 1877-1964. The collection contains drafts of Kropp's published articles and books, including That All May Learn: New Mexico State University, 1888-1964. There are additional writings on the early educational efforts of Hiram Hadley and Albert Jennings Fountain. There are also several copies of underground NMSU publications from the 1960s and 1970s such as The Conscience.

The collection is arranged into three series: Manuscripts; Research Notes, 1878-1978; and Printed Materials, 1910-1972.

Biographical Sketch

Simon F. Kropp received a bachelor's degree in education from the Southern Missouri Teachers College in 1938. He received his master's degree from the University of Missouri in 1939. He began advanced graduate study at University of California Los Angeles in 1940, but left in 1941 to do military service. From 1941-1946 Kropp was a Warrant Officer for the United States Army. He completed another summer of graduate study in the summer of 1946 at University of California Los Angeles. He arrived in the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts as a professor of history in 1947.

Kropp retired from New Mexico State University in 1980. In 1962, Kropp completed his doctorate in history at the University of Arizona. That same year he received the Westhafer Award for excellence in teaching from NMSU.

Among Kropp's research interest were the development of early public education in New Mexico. He published many articles on the subject including, "Hiram Hadley and the Founding of New Mexico State University." Kropp published the book That All May Learn: New Mexico State University, 1888-1964 in 1972.

The collection contains manuscripts of writings by Kropp and his research notes for those works, principally his history of New Mexico State University, That All May Learn, New Mexico State University 1888-1964. The topics of the other manuscripts pertain to Hiram Hadley and the development of education in New Mexico.
