Scope and Content

Leon Metzs papers document his research for the book Southern New Mexico Empire: The First National Bank of Doña Ana County, published in 1991. His research, conducted between ca.1987-1991, documents bank history through the years 1900-1990.

The Research Files consist of letters, transcripts of interviews Metz conducted, and typed notes on the of the history of the First National Bank of Doña County, and photocopies of early bank records and reports. Correspondence with Frank O. Papen concerns his involvement with the bank, while various other files contain correspondence pertaining to the production of the book.

Included in the publications is Frank O. Papen's copy of New Mexico Constitutional Convention, August 5, 1969. A Century of Memories, a pictorial history of New Mexico State University published in 1988, also is included.

Biographical Sketch

Leon C. Metz was born November 6, 1930 in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He has resided in El Paso, Texas since 1948. Metz worked in the oil fields of Texas, served as policeman in El Paso, archivist at the University of Texas at El Paso, executive assistant to the mayor of El Paso, public affairs officer for MBank, and chairman of El Paso's promotion of the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration. He currently works as a writer, lecturer, and tour leader.

Active in documenting the history of the west, Metz has produced numerous books, and articles in magazines, historical journals, and newspapers. His publications include: Pat Garrett: The Story of a Western Lawman, 1974; The Shooters, 1976; Fort Bliss: An Illustrated History, 1981 and Border: The U.S.-Mexico Line, 1989.
