Scope and Content

The collection contains photographs of student groups from the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and the Normal School of New Mexico, family members and farm and ranch scenes in the Mesilla Valley and the Lake Valley areas. New Mexico College of Agriculture images include various drama productions between 1904 and 1908. Mabel Poe's recollections of her childhood near Lake Valley and other stories, clippings, programs, printed materials and the Poe's college diplomas are also included. The materials were originally arranged and numbered in an album. The original numbering scheme has been maintained within the photographs. All other materials have been arranged alphabetically and placed into a series accordingly.

Biographical Sketch

James Ralph Poe was born in 1885, in Louisiana. His family came to the Mesilla Valley of New Mexico around 1892. Poe attended the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, graduating in 1908 with a degree in agriculture. He became New Mexico's first dairy commissioner in 1927, a post he held until his death in 1955. Mabel Parks Poe was born in 1887, near Lake Valley, New Mexico. After graduating from the Normal School in Silver City in 1906, she taught school in Geronimo, Arizona, before becoming principal of the Mesilla Park School around 1909. James and Mabel Poe were married in 1911. They operated a dairy farm near Mesilla, and had three children; Pauline Poe O'Neill, Elizabeth Poe Kerby and Rachel Poe Cochrane. All of the Poe children graduated from New Mexico State College. Mabel later earned a Bachelor of Arts at New Mexico State in 1944. Mabel Poe died in 1974.

Abstract

James Ralph Poe was New Mexico's first dairy commissioner in 1927. Mabel Parks Poe was principal of the Mesilla Park School around 1909. This collection consists of clippings and the diploma of James Ralph Poe from New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and the diploma of Mabel Parks Poe from the Normal School of New Mexico. Mrs. Poe's writings about living in Lake Valley, NM, correspondence and clippings are also included in the collection. A variety of photographs some of which are oversize can be found in the collection.
