Historical Sketch
The Progress Club of Las Cruces was first organized in 1914 by a group of women from University Park, Mesilla Park and Las Cruces, New Mexico. Orginally the group was the "Woman's Club of State College." In 1915, the Club joined the General Federation of Women's Clubs and changed its name.
From the beginning the purpose of the club has been service to New Mexico State University, the Las Cruces community, and to provide an outlet of expression for local talent. Over the years the club has assisted the university with picnics, dances, receptions and alumnae banquets. During World War II, the group was active in the war effort. In 1921, a loan fund was set up and the club began providing a scholarship award to an NMSU coed. Other Progress Club endeavors include Community Improvement Projects, Visually Handicapped programs, and an effort to raise the funds for an improved animal shelter in the 1980s.
For many years, the club met on the NMSU campus, at McFie Hall, the Women's Residence Hall, and Milton Student Center. Since leaving the New Mexico State University campus. In later years the group has met at Women's Improvement Association hall.
