Creator Sketch
As an autonomous body composed of Protestant and Catholic groups, the Doña Ana County Council of churches was formed to find solutions for local social needs. On Sunday, October 2, 1966, the Charter Day Assembly was held at St. Pauls Methodist Church, Las Cruces. Churches and Christian agencies belonging to the council were represented by delegates, who selected standing committees or task forces to do council work. Projects undertaken by the council included a mental health crisis center, migrant ministry and day academy. Other council concerns and projects related to senior citizens, communications, literature and services for disadvantaged people of the community. The organization was largely funded by member churches as their means allowed. Since the council was not itself a church, it did not have a creed or theology. Unaffiliated with an individual church, the council differed from other religious associations, being a community religious team of lay people, youth and ministers working together. In 1970, the council became the Religious Services Association of Doña Ana.
