James Pryor Nunn Papers
Collection
Identifier: Ms-0113
Scope and Content
The Nunn papers contain correspondence, financial records, legal documents, genealogical information, photographs, and other items. The correspondence is very limited. There is one set of letters from James Pryor Nunn to his wife, written in 1922. The rest of the correspondence consists of the girlhood letters of Patti and Matti Nunn to their father (Bill Nunn) and grandmother (Patty Beals Nunn), written during the 1950s.
The financial records, sparsely representing the period 1915-1969, include the check records of Nunn and Latham, bills, receipts, tax records, journals, and ledgers. Particularly interesting is the "Cattle Bought and Sold" journal, which records cattle transactions from the mid 1950s until the late 1960s.
Legal documents include deeds, land patents, a divorce decree, and estate papers. The genealogy, "The Saunders - Harris Clan," traces the William Ray Harris family, of which Matti and Patti Nunn" maternal grandmother was a member. A number of photographs portray family members and document ranch life.
Photographs (267 items), dated from 1888 to 1977, but mostly from the 1910s to the 1940s, include pictures of individuals and groups, primarily of the Nunn, Latham, Beals, Brownfield, Harris, and Miller families; and views of scenes and activities related to cattle ranching, hunting, railroading, cliff-dwellings, and other subjects. Locations represented include Berenda Creek, Cloudcroft, Engle, Flying Y Ranch, La Union, Lake Valley, Mesilla, Nutt, Oswala, Santa Fe, Santa Rita, Silver City, Stover Creek, Three Rivers, Tierra Blanca, White Mountains, White Rock, all in New Mexico; Amarillo and Brownfield, Texas; and Calipatria, California. Photographers represented included Fred J. Feldman, _____ Hatten, H. A. Schmidt, Rives Studio, and George H. Wentor.
