 Collection
Identifier: Ms-0098

Scope and Content

Various items relating to the history of Carrizozo and White Oaks, New Mexico were collected by Johnson S. Stearns, President of the Citizens State Bank in Carrizozo. Included in this collection is an article clipped from Colliers (Oct. 6, 1934) describing the Cow Pasture Pool. In addition to the article, there is a score card from the Cow Pasture and notes on the Colliers story written by Stearns. Correspondence concerning a Masonic fifty-year award presented to George Ferguson is also included in the collection. Of a more historical nature is a xerox copy of a typescript describing the settlement and commercial development of the White Oak and Carrizozo areas. With this reproduction is a clearer typed version of an account sponsored by Paul Moyer, proprietor of the White Oak and Carrizosa Stage lines. A letter from Floyd Stadmein to Johnson Stearns contained in this collection refers to the aforementioned account.

Historical Sketch

Carrizozo, in south-western Lincoln County, New Mexico was named for the Carrizo Springs. In 1899, the EP & NE Railroad built their line to this point and a town was started but not platted until 1907. James Allcook, a cattle ranch farmer, added a second "zo" to Carrizo, making the name Carrizozo, the extra syllable indicating "abundance."
