Scope and Contents
From the Series:
This series includes materials used by Taylor in writing the books The Mesilla Guard and A Place as Wild as the West Ever Was. Notes and drafts for both books are kept together in this series: The Mesilla Guard was published in 1976 and Mary Taylor worked with Nona Barrick on A Place as Wild as the West Ever Was. It was published in 2004. The book included a chapter on the Mesilla Guard, and the files on the subject overlap. The organization for A Place as Wild as the West Ever Was changed several times throughout its multiple drafts, and the series is arranged according to the published version of 2004 as much as possible, though several files containing older drafts reflect former chapter orders and titles. Some files cover designated chapters, others hold source material by date. Although some folders have been consolidated, the date ranges still frequently overlap. Chapter order: 1. The Source, 1541-1846 2. From Break of Day, 1847-1849 3. Ramón Ortiz and Colonization, 1849-1850 4. El Tratado de Mesilla, 1851-1853 5. The Mesilla Guard, 1851-1861 6. Calle del Correo, 1856-1861 7. La Entrada, 1861-1862 8. The California Column 1862-1863 9. Aftermath, 1864-1866 10. The Hermit and Violence in Southern New Mexico, 1866-1869 11. The Riot of 1871, 1869-1872 12. Migration, 1872
