Includes John J. Cockrell’s business and personal papers.
John J. Cockrell was an attorney in partnership with Thomas B. Catron and W. T. Thornton of Santa Fe. This collection of papers were located in the Tunstall store when purchased by John M. Penfield in the late 1800’s. The folder consists of correspondence. Various documents appear to be of a personal nature such as one from W.W. [Wayne Ware) Brazel Aug 12, 1888 written on DeLany & Terrell Post Trader stationary. The majority of the letters are on business letterhead of early New Mexico businesses such as: Angus V.V. Ranch, Browne & Manzanares Co., Ed. R. Bonnell Lumber, J.H. Blazer’s flouring and Lumber Mill, North Homestake Mining Co. and others. A Wells, Fargo & Co Express Freight receipt April 18, 1888 from JJ. Cockrell to Charles Merrick El Paso, and a letter from Brickenhoff and Brickenhoff attorneys at Law to John Cockrell July 7, 1888. On the back side of the letterhead is a printed list “Paul’s Select List of Reliable Attorneys in the United States, Jan 1888. The list contains names of attorneys from Alabama to the Wyoming territory.Only Three attorneys are listed for New Mexico.
