Scope and Contents

From the Collection: Items found in this collection were part of a student project at the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts done in fall of 1948 and summer of 1949. Warren C. Kreykenbohm, a student at the college, undertook a report on labor unions in New Mexico. While gathering information (which was to be submitted to Dr. Latien L. Camien), Kreykenbohm contacted labor leaders in the state. Among the labor leaders he corresponded with was C. D. Smotherman of the Carlsbad Potash Workers. Smotherman sent Kreykenbohm a number of items relating to the Carlsbad local's activities during the 1940s, and suggested some other labor leaders the student might contact.

Among the items that deal with the activities of Local 415 of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers are booklets containing agreements between the Carlsbad local and the Potash Company of America for the years 1940-1948. Other booklets define the union's purpose and list its accomplishments. A Word for New Potash Workers was put out by the local and lists the achievements of the Carlsbad Potash Workers, while Takes More Than Guns by Morris Wright briefly describes the history of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers (CIO). Other items found in the collection include Kreykenbohm's correspondence with Smotherman and other papers he acquired in his study of labor unions. Among these materials is an annotated list of delegates to Labor's Coordinating Committee, a news release from the Employment Security Commission of New Mexico, a graph showing potash industry profits, a shop steward bulletin on mine mill policy about the Marshall Plan, and several bargaining leaflets and flyers.

The collection also includes copies of the International Union's constitution and an undated mimeograph copy of the local's by-laws and constitution.
