Scope and Contents

The Peña and Marquez families have been sheep ranching in the San Mateo and Seboyeta areas of New Mexico, near Mt. Taylor, since the mid-nineteenth century. Abe M. Peña was born into this ranching tradition. Peña studied animal husbandry and sheep and wool production at the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now New Mexico State University) in the 1940s then was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study sheep and wool production in Australia in 1953 and 1954. Upon his return to New Mexico he became manager of the Frank A Hubbell Co. ranch near Quemado, then became manager and part owner, along with his parents and siblings, of the large Peña Ranch near San Mateo. His ranching activities led to involvement as member and board member of state and national livestock agencies, such as the Western Valencia Stockman’s Association, New Mexico Wool Growers, Inc., New Mexico Livestock Board, New Mexico Cattle Growers Association, Valencia County Farm and Livestock Bureau and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service during the 1950s and 1960s. Peña remained involved in his family’s ranching activities during his years in the Foreign Service, 1972-1984, and resumed a more active role upon his return to Grants, New Mexico in 1984.
The series contains items relating to the P. and P. Peña Ranch, Inc., state and national livestock and agricultural agencies, correspondence with state and federal public land agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and the New Mexico State Land Office, as well as information on mining and mineral leases, including companies mining uranium in the San Mateo area during the 1960s and 1970s. Folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title.
