 Sub-Series

Scope and Content

From the Collection: David Townsend's papers are divided into four series: New Mexico Constitutional Convention, New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped, Research Files, and Photographs.

Elected as a delegate from Otero County, District Three, Townsend attended the New Mexico Constitutional Convention of 1969. The first series of papers contains calendars, schedules, memoranda and official roll call sheets, as well as official convention minutes, highlights and bulletins.

The second series New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped contains records from the school's Board of Regents. These materials include minutes, publications, studies, and other organizational records.

The Research Files series is divided into five subseries: Community College, Lacy Simms, S. Omar Barker, Mrs. Clare Snow, and Miscellaneous. Community College contains research for Townsend's publication, Chronology of the Branch Community College Movement in New Mexico. These materials are unarranged. Materials from Townsend's research on the book Lacy at Ninety is included in Lacy Simms. Included are biographical remininces about Lacy Simms by collegues, friends and family. Of particular interest are the copies of memomirs of Simm's mother and maternal grandmother. These not only describe life in turn-of-the-century New Mexico, but provide a glimpse into the antebellum life of Alabama and Texas. Letters from Simms to Townsend contain Simmm's observations and recollections on various periods in his life. Besides the wealth of biographical material on Simms, the collection also shows the step-by-step development of Lacy at Ninety. Manuscript drafts, layouts and a copy of the finished book are included in the series. Financial records of the "Lacy At Ninety" committee, which supported the book's publication are also found in the collection. Newspaper clippings about Simms provide further information on his various accomplishments.

The final series, Photographs, contains images of David Townsend in addition to images of some of his research topics.
