Scope and Content

From the Collection: The Anne Bucher Papers span the years 1859-1973. The materials include business records and personal papers of Anne Bucher, her parents, grandparents, and several of her aunts and uncles. The materials have been divided into seven series: Anne Bucher, Carrie Bucher, William H. Bucher, West Family, Zollars Family, Miscellaneous, and Photographs.

The Anne Bucher series is arranged in six subseries: Correspondence, Financial Records, Subject Files, School Records, Printed Matter, and Miscellaneous. Correspondence is the lengthiest subseries, containing decades of letters received from numerous people Anne corresponded with over the years. The correspondence is primarily personal, reflecting the wide circle of friends she made during her extensive travels. The Financial Records subseries pertain to the wide range of business ventures pursued by Anne Bucher. Included are the National Bank Building in El Paso, Texas, which Anne managed from 1935-1959, mining, oil and gas leases, and stock investments. The Subject Files are files arranged and maintained by Bucher. They mainly concern the business of the National Bank Building, including upkeep, tenant leases, and renovations. Other files pertain to Bucher's personal property, including homes, land, and jewelry. Books, magazines, travel brochures, and theatrical playbills are included in the Printed Matter subseries. Miscellaneous contains mainly personal ephemera. These last two subseries are largely unarranged.

Carrie Bucher's series consists of three subseries: Correspondence, Financial Records, and Miscellaneous. Letters received from her daughter Anne are the largest portion of Correspondence. A segment of these letters are addressed to the family in general. The Financial Records regard the estate of William H. Bucher after his death in 1935.

The William H. Bucher series contains three subseries: Correspondence, Financial Records, and Miscellaneous. Correspondence is mainly letters received from various family members. The Financial Records subseries reflects William Bucher's banking and mining interests. The records also include the estates of various family members for which William was responsible. Miscellaneous contains personal effects of William Bucher.

The West series are the materials of Carrie Bucher's parents, Anne and Robert West, brother, Charles W. West, and her sister, Anne Hopewell. Included are correspondence, financial and legal records, and certificates from the Odd Fellows organization. One folder of materials contains letters to the Wests regarding the marriage of their daughter Carrie to William Bucher.

The Zollars series contains the materials of Anne's aunt Gertrude Zollars and her husband John. Correspondence, financial and legal records, and personal memorabilia are included in this series.

The materials in the Miscellaneous series are of unidentified origin.

The final series, Photographs, contains prints, negatives, lantern slides, and postcards. The prints and negatives largely are unidentified.
