Scope and Contents

Consists of check records, daybooks, business diaries and minute books, employee accounts, journals, ledgers, sales records and statements, contained in 51 bound volumes. Portions of some books were also used for such miscellaneous purposes as personal diaries, memoranda, schoolwork, religious notes, drafts of letters, tallies, and supply lists.
Arrangement of the volumes has been arbitrarily divided into two parts. The first, which covers the period from 1870 to approximately 1900, includes those volumes which were used most completely for financial purposes. In Part I, the records (for this period) of the private accounts of M. M. Chase and the Chase Ranch, the orchard, the cattle companies which Chase managed, and Chase, Eno and Company have been grouped together and arranged chronologically therein. (The accompanying organizational chart may make the arrangement in this section clearer.)
While records for the period 1870-1883 are scattered and incomplete, the accounting procedure begun in 1883 produced records of a high degree of accuracy, completeness, and cross-referencing capability until 1887. The private accounts of M. M. Chase were maintained separately from the records for the cattle companies managed by Chase. In both sets of records, entries were made in a daybook, a journal, and a ledger. Page numbers in the daybook refer to the journal, and page numbers in the journal refer to the ledger; page numbers in the ledger refer to the journal until 31 March 1887, from which time, in the private accounts set, the journal was dropped and the page numbers refer to the daybook. A new daybook (Volume 14) and ledger (Volume 16) were started 24 June 1890 in the private accounts set. Entries in the daybook (Volume 8) begun in 1887 refer to the ledger for the period 1883-1895 (Volume 10). The minute books (Volumes 12 and 13) and check records (Volume 28) refer to both sets of records.
Because many of the volumes in Part II were used for several purposes, they have been arranged in chronological order based on the earliest financial entry in each book. (A complete chronological listing is included in the Appendix.) These records, which represent the various activities of the Chase Ranch in later years, are not as consistent or complete as are the earlier accounts. For example, there are very few entries for 1908, and only two for 1915. The Chase Ranch accounts for the period 1926-1939 are found on 17 pages of Volume 51.
