Scope and Contents

From the Series: These small books were used infrequently, and all but one mostly are blank. The few entries from each year were primarily made by Nettie (Mrs. Mason G.) Chase and make note of family and ranch affairs, personal expenses, and her garden and poultry business. They are arranged chronologically.

The actual diaries in the Chase collection were written on sections of pages in volumes which were intended for other purposes; specifically, Volumes 5, 21, 37, and 38 in the Financial Documents Series. Volume 37 includes Ada Chase's diary from 17 May 1888 to 14 November 1888 (20 pages). Nettie Chase used two pages in Volume 5, five pages in Volume 21, and 134 pages in Volume 38 for a diary which she kept between June 1900 and April 1905. These diary entries comment on such aspects of family and ranch life as the health of family members, visitors to the ranch, sewing, cooking, work in the orchard, activity of employees, roundups, business trips, social affairs, and notes on the weather. The latest entry is a two-page listing in Volume 38 of notable dates from September 1948 to February 1951 by Margaret Rupert.
