Scope and Content
As of 1999 collection consists of records of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Game and Fish Warden, and State Game Commission (1905-1980). Includes annual reports from various years between 1910 and 1977, newsletters for various years between 1950 and 1977, and correspondence (1905-1959). Also within the collection are minutes, rules and regulations, publications, clippings, reports from game surveys, and one letterpress copybook (1905-1906).

Historical Note
The Office of the Game and Fish Warden was established by a legislative act in 1903 (1903 Laws of N.M., Chp. 48, Sec. 1). In 1912 a legislative act established the Game and Fish Department and designated the Game and Fish Warden as head of the Department (1912 Laws of N.M., Chp. 85, Sec. 1). In 1921 a legislative act established the State Game Commission to make rules and regulations and set policy for the Game and Fish Department (1921 Laws of N.M., Chp. 35, Sec. 1). In 1955 a legislative act changed the Game and Fish Warden's title to Director of the Game and Fish Department (1955 Laws of N.M., Chp. 59, Sec. 1). In 1973 a legislative act changed the name of the Game and Fish Department to the Department of Game and Fish (1973 Laws of N.M., Chp. 186, Sec. 3). In 1977 a legislative act made the Department of Game and Fish and the State Game Commission administratively attached to the newly-established Natural Resources Department (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 254, Sec. 9). In 1987 a legislative act abolished the Natural Resources Department and made the Department of Game and Fish and the State Game Commission administratively attached to the newly-established Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (1987 Laws of N.M., Chp. 234, Sec. 3). The purpose of the Department of Game and Fish is to protect and manage the fish and wildlife resources of New Mexico.
