Scope and Content

Collection consists of the territorial and New Mexico district court records for Roosevelt County, New Mexico (1903-1954). Included are record books (1903-1954) and case files (1903-1952). Record books consist of criminal dockets (1904-1913, 1931-1936, 1938-1945), civil dockets (1903-1913, 1932-1944), civil and criminal dockets (1910-1916), and court proceedings record books (1904-1912). Miscellaneous record books include jury warrants (1913-1932), declarations of intent and naturalization petitions (1907-1920), individual ledgers (1909-1920), jury list book (1923-1946), record of warrants (1913-1929), district attorneys preacipe book (1912-1923), juvenile court record (1919-1937), and trial balances (1909-1919, undated). Case files include criminal cases 1-513, 1146, 7506-8581, 32-460 (1904-1916, 1917, 1934, 1940-1949) and civil cases 1-780, 4-3214, 1-287 (1903-1912, 1904-1947, 1931-1943). Some insanity cases are included within the collection. Insanity and juvenile records are restricted. Many criminal and civil case files are unnumbered, and several changes in the numbering system have occurred. Large gaps may exist between case files. Other miscellaneous records include appearance bonds, appeal bonds, grand jury subpoenas, orders, warrants, and summons.

Access Restrictions

Juvenile Court Record (1919-1937) and Juvenile Court Orders are restricted under New Mexico statute (Laws of 1943, Chapter 40, Section 4).

Journal (1949-1954) is restricted under federal statute.

Insanity Cases restricted under New Mexico statute (NMSA 23-7-12 and 24-1-20).

Historical Note

Roosevelt County, New Mexico was established in 1903 and formed part of the 5th Judicial District of the United States Territorial Courts in New Mexico. Upon statehood in 1912 the Territorial Courts became the New Mexico District Courts. In 1921 Roosevelt County was transferred from the 5th to the 9th Judicial District.
