Scope and Content

Collection consists of the territorial and New Mexico district court records for Eddy County, New Mexico (1891-1935).Included are record books (1891-1913), case files (1891-1927), certificates of indebtedness (1896-1898), and other court material. Record books include various dockets (1891-1935) and court proceedings record books (1891-1913).Dockets include criminal (1891-1913), civil (1891-1912), civil and criminal (1901, 1902, 1904, 1910), and judgment (1891-1935) volumes. Court proceedings record books include a volume from the Chancery Court (1896-1897).Case files consist of criminal cases 1-1910 (1891-1922) and civil cases 1-4430 (1891-1912).Large gaps may exist between case files. Many civil and criminal case files are unnumbered. Many of the cases after 1912 are not part of this collection. Other court material consists of miscellaneous court orders, warrants, bar admissions and jury records.

Historical Note

Eddy County, New Mexico was established in 1889 and forms part of the 5th Judicial District of the United States Territorial Courts in New Mexico. Upon statehood in 1912, the Territorial Courts became the New Mexico District Courts.

Separated Material

Naturalization records are located in the "Naturalization Records by New Mexico Courts" (Accession Number 1959-281).

Additional court material is located in the "Records of the United States Territorial and New Mexico District Court Clerks" (Accession Number 1974-033).

Most statehood material remains with the Judicial District Court Clerk.
