As of 2000, collection consists of records of the New Mexico Legislative Education Study Committees predecessor the New Mexico Legislative School Study Committee (1964-1972). Includes administrative correspondence, reports, memorandums, minutes, press releases, and financial records. Some of the major topics covered by materials in the collection are teacher salaries, evaluations, and turnover; student-teacher ratios; vocational education; and religion and testing in public schools.

Historical Note
The Legislative School Study Committee (LSSC) was established by a legislative act in 1967 (1967 Laws of N.M., Chp. 44, Sec. 1-7). The LSSC, a joint interim committee of the New Mexico State Legislature, was formed for the purpose of recodifying public school laws. In 1971 a legislative act granted the LSSC permanent status and responsibility for studying public school problems, making recommendations to the Legislature on education issues, and preparing education legislation (1971 Laws of N.M., Chp. 287, Sec. 1-5). In 1979 a legislative act changed the name of the LSSC to the Legislative Education Study Committee, and expanded the scope of its functions (1979 Laws of N.M., Chp. 267, Sec. 1-6).
