Scope and Content

Collection consists of the territorial and New Mexico district court records for Lincoln County, New Mexico (1870-1957). The bulk of the material covers the years (1870-1912). Included are record books (1873-1912), case files (1870-1929), and other court material. Record books consist of various dockets (1873-1912), court proceedings record books for criminal and civil (1875-1879, 1884-1912), and Chancery Court hearings (1889-1897). Dockets include criminal and civil volumes (1873-1911). Case files consist of criminal cases 1-4720 (1871-1921) and civil cases 1-2011, 3745 (1870-1912, 1929). Large gaps may exist between case files. Many criminal and civil case files are unnumbered. Many of the cases after 1912 are not part of this collection. Other court material consists of an attorney's roll book for the 2nd Judicial District (1874-1899), bonds, warrants, subpoenas, bar admissions, and jury records.

Historical Note

Lincoln County, New Mexico was established in 1869 and formed part of the 2nd Judicial District of the United States Territorial Courts in New Mexico. In subsequent years, Lincoln County was transferred from the 2nd to the 4th Judicial District (1887), from the 4th to the 5th Judicial District (1889), from the 5th to the 6th Judicial District (1904), from the 6th to the 3rd Judicial District (1912), and from the 3rd to the 12th Judicial District (1971). Upon statehood in 1912, the Territorial Courts became the New Mexico District Courts.

Additional court material is located in the "Records of the United States Territorial and New Mexico District Court Clerks" (Accession Number 1974-033).

Most statehood material remains with the Judicial District Court Clerk.
