Scope and Content

As of 1997 collection consists of the records of the New Mexico Penitentiary, the Corrections Department, and its predecessors (1884-1990). Some penitentiary records pertain to county and federal inmates. Include are registers of prisoners, visitors, and parolees; annual reports; correspondence; case files; conduct records; medical records; account books; and intake records that usually include an image of the inmate. Intake records are files by inmate number. Includes annual and other reports, administrative correspondence and files, manuals, publications, client files, and press releases. Other records include annual and other reports, administrative correspondence and files, manuals, publications, client files, and press releases. Also within the collection are Parole Board records (hearings, case files, annual reports); proceedings of Duran vs. Anaya legal case; interview transcripts from 1983 concerning the 1980 New Mexico Prison Riot; and issues of "Enchanted News", the State Penitentiary magazine.

Historical Note

The New Mexico Penitentiary was established in 1884 (1884 NM Laws, Chp. 59, Sec. 1-19). In 1969 the Corrections Act created the Department of Corrections, with the following four divisions: Adult Institutions, Juvenile Institutions and Parole, Adult Probation and Parole, and Other Services (1969 NM Laws, Chp. 226, Sec. 1-21). In 1977 a legislative act changed the name of the Department to the Corrections Division and placed the Division within the newly established Criminal Justice Department (1977 NM Laws, Chp. 25, Sec. 1-108). In 1980 the name of the Criminal Justice Department was changed to the Corrections and Criminal Rehabilitation Department (1980 NM Laws, Chp. 150, Sec. 1-10). In 1981 the Department was reorganized and its names was changed to the Corrections Department (1981 NM Laws, Chp. 73, Sec. 1-9). With the creation of the Children, Youth, and Families Department in 1992, the responsibility for juvenile justice service was transferred from the Corrections Department to the Children, Youth, and Families Department (1992 NM Laws, Chp. 57, Sec. 1-58). The function of the Corrections Department is to administer a comprehensive criminal justice system in New Mexico.

Some inmate records (1884-1923) and prison riot investigation interviews (1983) are available on microfilm.
